英検®2級では、150語程度の長文を読んで45～55語の英語でまとめる「要約問題」が出題されます。
「準2級プラスより文章が長くて難しい……」
「45～55語にまとめるのが大変」

このように感じている人も多いのではないでしょうか。
要約問題は、解き方を理解したうえで、実際に問題を解くことが何より大切です。
この記事では、2級の問題形式を確認したあと、オリジナル例題と模範解答を使って、要約問題の解き方を実践的に学んでいきます。

英検2級要約問題の問題形式
2級の要約問題では、150語程度の英文を読み、その内容を45～55語の英語でまとめます。
ポイントは次の3つです。
長文中の細かい例や具体例をすべて入れる必要はありません。
「何について書かれているか」
「どのようなメリットや問題点があるか」
「筆者が何を伝えたいのか」
を押さえることが大切です。
「何について書かれているか」「どんな点が述べられているか」を押さえることが大切です。
「要約＝短くする作業」ではなく、「段落構造を読む作業」です。
英検2級要約問題の頻出テーマ
2級では、社会的なテーマがよく出題されます。
例えば、
- AIやテクノロジー
- 環境問題
- 働き方の変化
- SNSと人間関係
- 健康・ライフスタイル
- 教育の変化
- 地域社会の課題
- 食品ロス
などです。
背景知識がなくても解けますが、ニュースや英文記事に普段から触れておくと読みやすくなります。

More companies are introducing remote work systems. This change affects how people work and brings new styles of business management.
Remote work has several advantages for both employees and companies. Employees can save commuting time and use that time for their families. They also have more flexible schedules, which allows them to balance work and daily life. Some workers say that they can concentrate better at home and become more productive. In addition, companies can reduce office costs by allowing employees to work from home.
However, remote work also has some disadvantages. Employees have fewer chances to communicate directly with coworkers and may feel lonely or stressed. Some people find it difficult to separate work from their private lives, so they end up working longer hours. Because of these problems, many companies are now trying to find better ways to combine remote work and office work.

Many cities around the world are trying to reduce food waste. Every year, large amounts of good food are thrown away by households and local businesses even though much of it is still perfectly safe to eat.
To solve this serious problem, various efforts are being made by companies and communities. For example, some restaurants and supermarkets sell food at lower prices before it goes bad. In addition, local governments encourage citizens to buy only what they need and use leftovers more effectively. Some elementary schools also teach children about the importance of saving food.
However, changing people’s old habits is not easy. Many consumers still prefer to buy only the freshest products and often throw away food too quickly at home. Experts say that successfully reducing food waste will require not only new business systems but also significant changes in people’s personal attitudes and daily behavior.

要約問題で意識したいポイント
① 段落ごとの役割を考える
2級では、
- テーマの提示
- メリットや対策
- 問題点や課題
という流れで書かれることが多くあります。
まずは各段落がどのような役割を果たしているのかを考えながら読みましょう。
② キーワードを抽象化する
例えば、
sell food at lower prices before it goes bad
は、
take action to reduce food waste
のようにまとめることができます。
細かい具体例をそのまま書くのではなく、大きなくくりで捉えることが大切です。
③ 接続語を活用する
- however
- because
- therefore
- although
- while
- on the other hand
などを使うと、長い内容でも自然につなげられます。
④ 45～55語を意識する
短すぎると情報不足の可能性、長すぎると不要な内容が入っている可能性があります。
書き終わったら、必ず語数を確認しましょう。
